The Dos and Don’ts of Job Interviews


A job interview can be one of the most intimidating experiences in the world, whether you’re the interviewer or the interviewee. A good way to avoid feeling like you have butterflies in your stomach is to know what exactly you should and shouldn’t do in an interview, so that you can feel prepared and confident when the time comes. If you’re in the market for a new job, here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind before your next interview!

Do Research on Companies
Learn as much as you can about companies where you are applying. If a company has a website, check it out to get an idea of their business. Read news articles, blogs, etc. Anything that will help you get a good sense of what it’s like to work there. Do they treat their employees well? What is their mission statement? What kind of products or services do they offer?

Do Ask Questions About the Company/Job
Asking questions about a company is a good idea for a couple reasons. For one, it gives you information about what you’re getting into by showing your interest in learning more about your future employer.

Do Take Time to Prepare For Your Interview
Job interviews can be nerve-wracking, so do your research. The interview itself is really just a continuation of your job search, so don’t wing it—it’s not worth it. Check out job ads to get a sense for what they’re looking for, then find people in your network who might be able to offer you some insight into company culture and current challenges. Your approach should take into account information like what recruiters are looking for in candidates: Think Beyond Basic Answers.

Do Dress Professionally
Dress professionally for job interviews, even if you think they’re going to be informal. Your attire is a reflection of your own self-image and professionalism, so dress in clothing that demonstrates you are an excellent candidate. Whether it’s a suit or nice pants with a button-down shirt, leave those baggy jeans at home—and instead wear something that shows you take your job search seriously.

Do Arrive Early To Your Interview
Nothing says disorganized more than arriving to an interview late. It shows you haven’t taken your interview seriously, and it’s a bad first impression. Leave plenty of time to get to your interview location so you can check in with security or reception on time, without appearing rushed or flustered. And remember: early is on time; on time is late; late is unacceptable.

Don’t Wear Perfume/Cologne, it Doesn’t Mix Well With Other People’s Scent
Sure, you’ve been told that your cologne makes you smell like a million bucks, but other people in an interview setting may find it unpleasant. Most people will opt to wear a small amount of scent or none at all to avoid giving anyone else a headache during their job search. If you’re worried about smelling like B.O., use a deodorant with light scent instead!

Don’t Worry About Taking Notes; Just Listen!
It’s easy to get caught up in what we should say next. Instead, keep calm and listen—note-taking can wait. When you’re being interviewed for a job, your goal is to sell yourself to your future employer. You want him or her to know why you’re a great fit for their company; so give them no reason not to hire you.

And finally, before leaving, DO Shake Hands With Everyone Present.
It’s a bit more formal than a friendly handshake, but still shows you are courteous and respectful. Shake everyone’s hand; if you don’t know who everyone is, ask politely. This isn’t just an interview—it’s also your first impression to these people; leave them wanting more!

Don’t Eat During the Job Interview
Going in hungry may seem like a good idea, but if you show up famished, chances are your mouth will run wild. Food is fuel for your body. If you eat before going into an interview, it’ll help keep you awake and focused on what’s being said. Plus, you’ll be more likely to order a salad instead of fries with lunch when you get back to your desk!

Don’t Get Too Emotional – Stay Calm and Coolheaded
During a job interview, it’s vital to keep your cool. You don’t want to appear too eager or desperate; don’t tell them how much you really need a job. Act professional, and keep a cool head throughout your meeting—even if it ends up going badly. When an interviewer asks you why you want to work for their company, listen closely to their response. It will let you know what they like about their firm.
